Did you know that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month? I hope there is some sort of event taking place in your area, or that an agency or organization will be doing something to bring more attention to rape crisis intervention.
Here in the Tampa Bay area you will have the opportunity to attend the Tenth Annual Take Back the Night experience. Our TPD Chief, Jane Castor, will be speaking. Many representatives of the media will be present. Various professional athletes will also be participating, so look for a Tampa Bay Buc, a Ray, a Bolt…
Most importantly, there will be survivors of sexual assault/abuse who will be sharing words of encouragement, inspiration and how they found a place of empowerment over their tragedies. It is quite an honor to be part of the Sexual Violence Task Force of Tampa Bay Speakers Bureau. What a sisterhood that has formed among such brave, determined women.
Verizon will be on board, as well as ABC Action News Team, The Spring, Family Justice Center VOICES. I will have a book table available for those who are interested in obtaining a copy of my book, ORANGE BLOSSOM WISHES: Child Molested, Woman Abused—Her Victorious Journey to Freedom, and sharing my story. I hope you will come by and visit, introduce yourself and share a moment with me there.
If you are not in the Tampa Bay area, you still have the opportunity to view the day’s happenings at The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay’s website. Just click here.
Whatever you do, please take a moment during April and remember the victims of sexual violence, those who are still with us, and especially those whose lives were snuffed out far too early.
