This will be a short one. I try not to write as “shooting from the hip” when an issue causes that rare occasion of the short blonde getting her blood pressure up, so I’ll try to keep it sweet and simple. When I heard about this “debate,” I had to research it before offering to believe that 1) a woman who 2) purports to be a Christian and 3) is a known national reporter would make such a comment as this:
“Is the White House out of their mind? Does the West Wing not know what the left wing is doing? We’re $14 trillion in debt and now we’re going to cover birth control, breast pumps, counseling for abuse? Are we going to do pedicures and manicures as well?” (Sandy Rios on Fox News)
Completely setting aside the birth control controversy (which oddly enough is a point where Ms. Rios and I probably agree), the very idea she is shallow or uneducated on the nuts and bolts of just how domestic violence really works is an insult to me, personally, as a survivor, a Christian, and now pastoral counselor and advocate who eats, sleeps and breathes doing all I can to help any victim or struggling survivor to find their hope, faith and safety. I have a suspicion the great percentage of other victims and survivors would share in this attitude.
How demeaning… How degrading… How uncaring… How could you say that? What were you thinking? A beaten woman is not something to be taken lightly. Do you know that 1 in 4 (conservatively) women either has been or will become a victim of domestic violence, and that 45% of black American women who are murdered die at the hands of their spouse or intimate partner? Have you ever been grabbed by your hair and had your head slammed into a door? Yes, it happens – to Christians. It happened to me. Counseling availability for victims of domestic violence is not a subject to be taken lightly or dismissed as frivolous, or compared to a manicure…

Uh, don’t you know that she would opt for funding the manicures and pedicures over abuse counseling. Cheaper, and of course, solution-focused. We’ll have to point our abused people in that direction, I guess.
